How to Remove Urine Smell from a Mattress

Urine penetrates deep into the mattress layers, and surface cleaning doesn't help. We explain why the smell returns and how to remove it for good.

How to Remove Urine Smell from a Mattress

Urine smell in a mattress is one of the most common reasons people contact us. Whether it comes from a small child, a pet or an unwell family member, the problem is always the same: the odour seems to disappear but returns after a few days, especially in humid air. The reason lies in the chemistry of urine.

Why the urine smell keeps coming back

Urine contains urea, uric acid and urate crystals. When the liquid dries, the uric acid crystals remain lodged between the mattress fibres. These crystals are water-resistant — ordinary water or a soap solution only dissolves the surface layer, while the crystals reactivate with moisture and the smell returns.

This is exactly why surface wiping never gives a lasting result. The source of the odour sits deep in the filling, where ordinary cleaning cannot reach.

What you can do right away

If the accident is fresh, act quickly — the less time urine spends in the mattress, the easier it is to remove.

  • Blot the liquid immediately with a dry towel or paper, pressing rather than rubbing.
  • Don't pour on water — it drives the urine deeper into the filling.
  • Apply a thin layer of baking soda, leave for a few hours, then vacuum it up.
  • Avoid perfumed sprays — they mask the smell but don't dissolve the crystals.

Why professional cleaning works

To dissolve urate crystals we use enzyme-based products that break down the organic compound at a molecular level. We then extract the dissolved residue together with the moisture using a specialised machine that pulls it out of the deep filling. This is the only method that removes the source of the odour rather than masking it.

After treatment the mattress is left slightly damp and dries completely within 4–8 hours. In most cases a single thorough treatment is enough for the smell to disappear entirely.

When to call a specialist

If the smell has lasted more than a couple of days, returns after home cleaning, or involves a large stain, don't waste time on home remedies. Professional enzyme treatment is faster, safer and delivers a guaranteed result — especially in households with allergy sufferers and young children.
