Dust Mites in Your Mattress: How to Get Rid of Them
Dust mites live in every mattress and feed on skin cells. Their waste is the leading indoor allergen.

If you wake up with a runny nose, sneezing or a blocked nose, it isn't always a cold. Often the cause is dust mites — microscopic creatures that live in every mattress and feed on the skin cells we shed every day.
Why a mattress is the ideal habitat
A mattress gives dust mites everything they need: warmth, moisture (from sweat) and food (skin cells). The average person sheds about 1.5 grams of skin cells a night and sweats up to half a litre — creating a perfect environment for mites deep in the filling.
What you can do yourself
- Wash bedding at 60 °C or higher once a week — this kills the mites.
- Air out the mattress and keep the bedroom cool and dry.
- Use an allergen-proof mattress protector that blocks mites from entering.
- Vacuuming alone doesn't help — it doesn't remove mites or their waste from the filling.
Why professional cleaning is effective
During deep extraction cleaning we remove dust mites, their waste and the skin cells they feed on. Where needed we combine this with high temperature and anti-allergen treatments that significantly reduce allergen levels. This is especially important for allergy sufferers, asthmatics and young children.
How often to do it
For people with allergies we recommend a thorough mattress clean every 4–6 months. Even without allergies, a mattress should be cleaned at least once a year — good sleep starts with a clean, hygienic mattress.
