Dry vs Wet Upholstery Cleaning: Which to Choose

The choice of method isn't a matter of taste — it depends on the fabric. The wrong method can damage furniture irreversibly.

Dry vs Wet Upholstery Cleaning: Which to Choose

One of the most common client questions is whether their furniture will be cleaned "wet" or "dry". In reality, neither method is universally better — what matters is the fabric composition and the manufacturer's care instructions.

Wet cleaning (extraction)

In wet cleaning, a cleaning solution is applied to the fabric and then extracted together with the dirt using a powerful machine. This method removes deeply embedded dirt, allergens and odours and suits most durable fabrics such as cotton and synthetics. Drying time is 4–8 hours.

Dry cleaning (low moisture)

Dry cleaning uses minimal moisture and special compounds that bind dirt without soaking the fabric through. It suits delicate and water-sensitive fabrics that can deform or fade from moisture — such as flock, viscose and certain velvets. The furniture is usable almost immediately.

How to decide

  • Check the fabric code on the care label (W, S, WS or X).
  • Code W allows water-based cleaning; S requires a solvent, i.e. a dry method.
  • Code X means vacuum cleaning only — such fabric must never be wetted.
  • If in doubt, don't experiment — the wrong method can leave marks that can't be fixed.

Our approach

Before every job we assess the fabric code and run a small test in a hidden spot. This lets us choose the method that's safe for that specific material and achieve the best result without risk. This is why professional cleaning is more reliable than trial and error with home remedies.
